Applehead Factory had less then 48 hours to transform a horse into Mystic the Unicorn. The horse was filmed with no tracking markers, a soft focus and the camera was not locked, which made it a challenge to place the horn on the horses head. The artists at Applehead Factory created a 3D unicorn horn, and built a rig to give the artists multiple controls to aid in matching the live action horses movement. The live action background plates were used for each of the 5 shots and hand tracked frame by frame. The Horn was textured and lit to match the background plates and the final renders were then passed on to the production company, Get-Kinetic, for final compositing and then delivered to Tremor Video’s agency, 20nine.
